SPAN 10002   - Spanish - Applied Language Learning Lessons  (1-2)  
This course provides private instruction in speaking, writing, and listening skills for languages at all levels. No language background or experience is required. Materials are specifically chosen for each student's ability and level of advancement. May be repeated for credit.
SPAN 10300   - First Year Spanish 1  (3)  
Introduction to Spanish language. By the end of the course, students are expected to develop Novice Mid proficiency in speaking, the main goal of the course, as well as in reading, writing, and listening comprehension. In addition to language skills, students explore accepted cultural patterns of behavior and communication; cultural products; popular beliefs, values, and attitudes in the Spanish speaking countries as they manifest themselves within the scope of themes covered during the semester. Not open to students with a background in Spanish.

SPAN 10400   - First Year Spanish 2  (3)  
The second part of the introductory Spanish course. Students completing the course demonstrate Novice Mid/High level of proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and listening comprehension. In addition to language skills, students explore accepted cultural practices, patterns of behavior and communication, cultural products, and popular beliefs, values, attitudes in the Spanish speaking countries within the scope of themes covered during the semester. Not open for students with more than 1 year of high-school/college Spanish or native speakers of Spanish.

SPAN 10500   - Spanish Grammar 1  (3)  
This course is primarily intended for students majoring in Spanish Language and Culture. Its main goal is to consolidate grammatical skills previously attained. The following verb tenses for regular and irregular indicative verbs will be taught: present, preterite, imperfect, future, conditional. In addition the following material will also be included: possessive adjectives and pronouns; demonstrative adjectives and pronouns; interrogative pronouns; por and para; ser and estar; and relative pronouns. The course will be accompanied by a component of readings and discussions.
Prerequisite: SPAN 10400 (may be taken concurrently) or FLAN 10400 (may be taken concurrently)  
SPAN 20000   - Hispanic-American Experience Through Literature : Spanish  (4)  
This course covers the development of Hispanic American societies from their beginnings to the multi-ethnic character that marks them today. Emphasis will be given to the relationship between Europe and America and its consequences on selected authors and literary works.

SPAN 20100   - Introduction to Hispanic-American Literature: Spanish  (4)  
Este curso es una introducción a la literatura hispanoamericana desde la mitología de las culturas precolombinas hasta el Renacimiento, el Romanticismo y el Modernismo, lo que hoy se denomina el "Realismo Mágico". Se hará hincapié en los esfuerzos de los estudiantes por escribir sus propias historias.

SPAN 20300   - Spanish for Heritage Speaker 1  (3)  
A language maintenance and development course intended for bilingual students who grew up in a Spanish-speaking home and speak or understand the language to some extent, but have not had prior instruction in the Spanish language and want to improve their language skills through formal study. The course focuses on vocabulary development, literacy skills, grammar, reading and writing, using short stories and other professional publications as texts to examine. The course includes consideration of the relationship between language and culture. Students discuss, write reports, and give oral presentations in Spanish on the stories they have read and analyzed. This course does not fulfill the General Education requirement for Humanities Restricted to heritage speakers of Spanish.
SPAN 20400   - Spanish for Heritage Speaker 2  (3)  
The course focuses on vocabulary development, literacy skills, grammar, reading and writing and includes consideration of the relationship between language and culture. Students are expected to view films from Latin American and Spain outside of class. In class, students discuss the significance and meaning of the films and examine language patterns. Students discuss, write reports, and give oral presentations in Spanish on the films they have viewed and analyzed. This course does not fulfill the General Education requirement for Humanities. Restricted to heritage speakers of Spanish.
SPAN 20600   - Spanish Grammar 2  (3)  
This course is primarily intended for students majoring in Spanish Language and Culture. Its main goal is to consolidate grammatical skills attained in Spanish Grammar 1 and advance students to greater competency in understanding and using Spanish grammar. The following verb tenses for indicative regular and irregular verbs will be covered: present perfect tense; pluscuamperfect tense; future perfect tense. The present, imperfect, and pluperfect subjunctive will be included as well as the use of the subjunctive with if clauses." This learning will be accompanied by a component of readings and discussions."

SPAN 21600   - Spanish Language Workshop  (1)  
A Foreign Language workshop provides beginning students in a foreign language with practice in reading, writing, and speaking in the target language. Opportunities for practice in pronunciation and conversation enhance oral/aural skills. Consult the Director of the Foreign Language Program for the relevant syllabus in the target language. A variety of workshops are offered.
SPAN 28200   - Second-Year Spanish 1  (3)  
The third semester of Spanish. Students completing the course demonstrate Novice High/Intermediate Low level of proficiency which manifests in the students’ beginning ability to speak and write in paragraph-length discourse, to ask simple questions and to begin to create with the language. Emphasis on readings reflecting Spanish culture (practices, perspectives, and products) within the range of themes covered during the semester.

SPAN 28300   - Second-Year Spanish 2  (3)  
The fourth semester of Spanish. This course is designed to further increase proficiency in Spanish and enhance cultural awareness. Students completing the course demonstrate Intermediate Low/Intermediate Mid level of proficiency which manifests in the students’ ability to speak and write in paragraph-length discourse, to ask a variety of questions and to create with the language. In addition to this, students will read about and discuss issues pertaining to Spain touched upon during the semester.

SPAN 30001   - ST: Spanish for Health Professionals  (3)  
This topics course focuses on issues relevant to the study of a foreign language and the cultures which communicate in it. This course is intended for foreign language minors or any other students who want to enhance foundation skills in reading, writing, and speaking in a foreign language. Consult the Director of the Foreign Language Program for relevant details. The course is taught in the target language. Topics will vary.
SPAN 30100   - Spanish Conversation and Composition 1  (3)  
This course is primarily intended for students majoring in Spanish Language and Culture Its main goal is to assist students to reach Intermediate Mid-Proficiency in Speaking/Listening and Writing Spanish.

SPAN 36300   - Spanish Linguistics  (3)  
This course will delve into the study of phonetics (the minimal unit that makes up languages);phonology (how speech sounds are produced) and improving pronunciation; morphology (how words are formed out of smaller meaningful units);syntax (how sentences and other phrases can be constructed out of smaller phrases and words) Additionally the course will include major pronunciation differences across the Spanish-speaking world with special attention paid to Latin America, Basque, Gallego, and Catalan Spanish.

SPAN 37200   - Spain and Its Literature  (3)  
Spanish majors will familiarize themselves with the literature of Spain from the epic poem Cantar de Mio Cid, to the works of Juan Ruiz, the Arcipreste de Hita, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Lope de Vega, Josandeacute; de Espronceda and other realist poets; and Miguel de Unamuno, Josandeacute; Ortega y Gasset, and Gabriel Mirandoacute;, among other prominent writers.

An electronically designed and rhetorically selected presentation of the student's writing following program guidelines is submitted with the assistance of the advisor. A specific, original research project may be included. Oral presentation is required. Foreign Language majors only. Pass/No Pass.
SPAN 40500   - Community Internship for Spanish Majors  (3)  
Senior Spanish majorswho wish to earn credit through hands-on experience in the many agencies in Chicagoland serving the Latino population will take this course 150 hours of internship is required, together with other academic requirements, one of which is an acceptable report written in Spanish on the experience Students must apply to the Foreign Language Program Director for permission to take an internship.

This course is primarily intended for students majoring in Spanish Language and Culture. Its main goal is to assist students to reach Low Advanced Proficiency in Speaking/Listening and Writing in SpanishStudents will read and discuss international scholarship on a variety of topics related to studies on Spanish language and cultureAn acceptableterm paper is required.

SPAN 47600   - Spanish Seminar  (3)  
This course aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of Spanish-speaking countries worldwide. It will focus on these countries most recent social, political, and/or cultural developments. Characteristics of each country studied during the semester will be highlighted for a deeper awareness of their cultural differences and similarities. Spanish major seniors that complete this seminar are provided with unique opportunities to be exposed to the culture of Spanish-speaking countries as well as to work on a focused topic of interest that arises from seminar discussions and readings. The student submits an acceptable research paper and must present the research to the class or preferably at a local or national conference.

SPAN 49800   - World Language Independent Study  (1)  
This course provides capable students with an in-depth understanding of the research and writing needed in preparation for graduate studies in a foreign language Language major seniors that complete this capstone course are provided with unique opportunities to broaden their knowledge of the target language and its influence on cultures around the globe Students in consultation with their advisor or mentor will select a narrow topic to explore throughout the semester. Topics may include issues in history, literature, political science, social justice, sociology, and so forth. The research product (a paper) must be a sustained study with a Works Cited page, using an appropriate parenthetical documentation style Quality research could result in publication, a desirable goal. The student who applies for an independent study in a foreign language must have achieved Low High-Proficiency in the target language
