World Language
Objectives
The World Language Program offers students an opportunity to study a variety of World languages, including more commonly taught languages such as Spanish, Italian, French, and German, and less commonly taught and critical languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Polish, and Russian. In addition, the program offers language courses for people with specialized reasons for language study such as Spanish for medical professionals or law enforcement officers. Language offerings vary depending on student interest and demand.
Classes in World Languages are conducted in both conventional teacher-fronted settings that include opportunities for small-group learning and also in roundtable format. Maximum enrollment in World Language classes is ordinarily 15 students or fewer. Courses in less commonly taught and critical languages typically have smaller sections.
The philosophy of the Lewis University World Language department stresses immediate practical language skills and communication. Emphasis is on how to use the language in culturally appropriate ways rather than simply learning facts about the language. Very little English is used.
Students are encouraged to carefully select the language of study and to consider taking one of the less frequently taught critical languages, the knowledge of which is especially valued today.

A World Language and Culture minor is a flexible, interdisciplinary program that focuses on a specific linguistic and geographical region, requires three semesters of language study, and allows students to choose three additional courses that will enhance their understanding of the culture and the language they wish to pursue. Students can choose these three additional courses from among numerous offerings in cultural studies as well as additional courses in the target language.
This minor not only prepares students to become more proficient in a world language, but it also documents their dedication to global citizenship. Because employees with proficiency in world languages and intercultural understanding are already in high demand, those who complete the minor will be able to distinguish themselves as they compete for jobs. This minor is, therefore, especially beneficial for majors in Aviation, Communication, Criminal/Social Justice, English, History, Journalism, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, and Pre-Med or Pre-Law – all those who plan to pursue careers in particular geographic regions of the U.S. or the world, and all those in business, education, or nursing who may be interested in making themselves more marketable by preparing themselves to work in global companies or not-for-profit agencies.
Students are strongly encouraged to engage in a Study Abroad opportunity.
The minors offered include Arabic, Chinese, East European (Polish and Russian), and Spanish languages and cultures. These are critical languages currently having great applicability.
Students are awarded credit in First-Year World Language 1 and/or 2 by earning a qualifying score on AP, CLEP, IB tests, or on any accredited world language proficiency examination. Native and heritage speakers of Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Polish or Russian who choose to pursue minors in the languages can have up to 9 credits waived in the language minor of their choice through Prior Learning Assessment. FLAN 10500 - Spanish Grammar 1 (3)
This course is primarily intended for students majoring in Spanish Language and Culture. Its main goal is to consolidate grammatical skills previously attained. The following verb tenses for regular and irregular indicative verbs will be taught: present, preterite, imperfect, future, conditional. In addition the following material will also be included: possessive adjectives and pronouns; demonstrative adjectives and pronouns; interrogative pronouns; por and para; ser and estar; and relative pronouns. The course will be accompanied by a component of readings and discussions.

Through interactive activities, multimedia resources, and cultural explorations, students will develop a practical understanding of the Korean language and culture. FLAN 20300 - Spanish for Heritage Speakers 1 (3)
A language maintenance and development course intended for bilingual students who grew up in a Spanish-speaking home and speak or understand the language to some extent, but have not had prior instruction in the Spanish language and want to improve their language skills through formal study. The course focuses on vocabulary development, literacy skills, grammar, reading and writing, using short stories and other professional publications as texts to examine. The course includes consideration of the relationship between language and culture. Students discuss, write reports, and give oral presentations in Spanish on the stories they have read and analyzed. This course does not fulfill the General Education requirement for HumanitiesRestricted to heritage speakers of Spanish.
FLAN 20400 - Spanish for Heritage Speakers 2 (3)
The course focuses on vocabulary development, literacy skills, grammar, reading and writing and includes consideration of the relationship between language and culture. Students are expected to view films from Latin American and Spain outside of class. In class, students discuss the significance and meaning of the films and examine language patterns. Students discuss, write reports, and give oral presentations in Spanish on the films they have viewed and analyzed. This course does not fulfill the General Education requirement for Humanities. FLAN 20600 - Spanish Grammar 2 (3)
This course is primarily intended for students majoring in Spanish Language and Culture. Its main goal is to consolidate grammatical skills attained in Spanish Grammar 1 and advance students to greater competency in understanding and using Spanish grammar. FLAN 21600 - Foreign Language Workshop (1)
A Foreign Language workshop provides beginning students in a foreign language with practice in reading, writing, and speaking in the target language. Opportunities for practice in pronunciation and conversation enhance oral/aural skills. Consult the Director of the Foreign Language Program for the relevant syllabus in the target language. A variety of workshops are offered.

This course is primarily intended for students majoring in Spanish Language and Culture. Its main goal is to assist students to reach Low Advanced Proficiency in Speaking/Listening and Writing in SpanishStudents will read and discuss international scholarship on a variety of topics related to studies on Spanish language and cultureAn acceptableterm paper is required.

SPAN 47600 - Spanish Seminar (3)
This course aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of Spanish-speaking countries worldwide. It will focus on these countries most recent social, political, and/or cultural developments. Characteristics of each country studied during the semester will be highlighted for a deeper awareness of their cultural differences and similarities. Spanish major seniors that complete this seminar are provided with unique opportunities to be exposed to the culture of Spanish-speaking countries as well as to work on a focused topic of interest that arises from seminar discussions and readings. The student submits an acceptable research paper and must present the research to the class or preferably at a local or national conference.

SPAN 49800 - World Language Independent Study (1)
This course provides capable students with an in-depth understanding of the research and writing needed in preparation for graduate studies in a foreign language Language major seniors that complete this capstone course are provided with unique opportunities to broaden their knowledge of the target language and its influence on cultures around the globe Students in consultation with their advisor or mentor will select a narrow topic to explore throughout the semester. Topics may include issues in history, literature, political science, social justice, sociology, and so forth. The research product (a paper) must be a sustained study with a Works Cited page, using an appropriate parenthetical documentation style Quality research could result in publication, a desirable goal. The student who applies for an independent study in a foreign language must have achieved Low High-Proficiency in the target language
