English / Bachelor of Arts
Program: BA-ENGL-4
Total Credit Hours: 120
Major Credit Hours: 43-53
The English Studies Department offers two Concentrations of study:
- Language and Literature
- Writing
The Concentration in Language and Literature prepares the student for a variety of high-level careers that lead to future leadership. Students receive extensive preparation for graduate and advanced degrees in English, other graduate programs in the Humanities, and for professional work in related disciplines that require enhanced verbal and analytical skills, such as medicine, law, library science, management, public relations, and humanities administration or research. In general, English majors achieve the highest scores on the MCAT and LSAT exams required for entrance to Medical and Law schools.
The Concentration in Writing allows students to focus on creative writing, professional writing, or a combination. This concentration emphasizes three dimensions of writing as a profession and discipline: the creative, the professional, and the theoretical. Students complete the core curriculum and then, depending on particular interests and talents, choose to specialize in Creative Writing, Professional Writing, or pursue a more individualized course of study in General Writing. English majors with a Writing concentration may not minor in Literature and Language.
